  • Join Williamson County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (8/10/2018)

Joining Williamson Co – Amateur Radio Emergency Service, WC-ARES, located in Williamson County Texas, is quite easy, just two simple requirements and one simple online form to fill out.

As outlined on the Amateur Radio Relay League, ARRL website, the Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.

    ARES Membership Requirements:

    • Every licensed amateur regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization is eligible to apply for membership in ARES. Training may be required or desired to participate fully in ARES. Please inquire at the local level for specific information. Because ARES is an Amateur Radio program, only licensed radio amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable but is not a requirement for membership.
    • The second requirement is a desire to serve.

    Online Registration Form:

In lieu of the ARRL paper registration form, we have an on-line form that collects the same info but also allows you to return and enter/track your training. This also allows the ARES leadership at the county, district, or section level to generate reports based on training, equipment, or rosters. You are also encouraged to update/check your contact info periodically. Addresses, call signs, license class, phone numbers, cell phone carriers, email address, etc. change. It’s much easier for each member to verify their own info that asking a volunteer to do this for hundreds of members.  Each member is expected to verify your own data before Field Day or one of our Simulated Exercise Training, SET, or Public Service Events.

To register as a new member, follow this link New Member Registration Form.  Complete the form making sure to complete the asterisked mandatory fields.

Once you have completed and submitted your registration form a ARES officer will send you a login and password to the South Texas Section Amateur Radio Emergency Service member database.

    Updating Your Registration Info:

Each member should update their own information 1-2 times a year even if nothing has changed. Why, because one of the reports the ARES leadership pulls quite often is how dated is this information is. If your records are 2-3-4 years old the data could be wrong and not trusted. So check it and use the Update button on the bottom of the form. It is suggested you do this before every Field Day and Public Service Event you participate in.

  • Heat kills (8/6/2018)

Heat kills by pushing the human body beyond its limits. In extreme heat and high humidity (which is when the air has moisture and feels sticky) the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature and keep the body comfortable. A heat wave is an extended period of extreme heat, and there is often high humidity. These conditions can be dangerous for people who don’t take care of themselves properly.

  • Touch a Truck (6/24/2018)

Touch a Truck event in Georgetown was highly successful.
We had in excess of 550 people come by before 11 am that we were able to count. We shut down event at 1500 and demobilized.
We had a great response to our EmComm trailer from the public and agencies alike, made new connections with new agencies at event, and strengthened others.
Thanks to all that worked so diligently in the heat to make this event successful. And to everyone that supported the 2018 Touch a Truck in any way over the past few weeks.

    Excellent Teamwork!

  • Debut of New Equipment that Enhances Emergency Communication in Williamson County (6/13/2018)

Debut of New Equipment that Enhances Emergency Communication in Williamson County

On June 23, 2018, at the Touch-the-Truck Event in Georgetown at Wolf Ranch Shopping Center,  Williamson County Amateur Radio Services(WC-ARES) will demonstrate the capabilities of its newly acquired communications trailer. Hours for the event will be from 9:00 AM until Noon. This trailer improves the organization’s response to the agencies it supports with emergency communications.  The trailer, equipped with a generator and antenna mast, is stocked with communication resources that enables the organization to remotely deploy radio operators.

This deployment will allow the operators to communicate on VHF and UHF Amateur Radio frequencies using voice and data methods to get critical messages through for supported agencies in the event of a disaster. These frequencies allow for interoperability with the agencies being served.

The acquisition was made possible by generous donations from public and service minded individuals. These donors recognize the need for Amateur Radio in providing communication during times of natural and man-made disasters; a time when normal communication have been interrupted.  Donations can be made to help equip the trailer with increased communication capabilities and can be made at dev.wc-ares.org/donations/ or you may send an email to wc.ares.pio@gmail.com.  Williamson County ARES, Inc. is a 501(c)3 for charitable donation purposes.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES®) consists of Amateur Radio licensees who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.  ARES is an official organization of the Amateur Radio Relay League, ARRL, and serves disaster related agencies.
